Chai Shuk Lan

Born in 1947, Kuching, Chai Shuk Lan is an active member in Kuching Chung Hua Arts Association, Sarawak Artists Society, Sarawak Fine Arts Society, and a life member of the Balai Seni Visual Negara. She is a director of Hock Kui Development Sdn Bhd.

Shuk Lan’s discipline is in Chinese ink painting, a unique art form that is difficult to master due to its technical demands, the focus on the aesthetics from each and every brush stroke applied. The artist’s dominance of the brush and control of the ink following the brush are essential to creating a sense of strength and yet the softness of the object, contrast and depth, sense of movement, calmness or vigor in order to perfectly form the objects and to bring out the essence of the subject. The artist’s signature, inscription, and seals are an integral part of the carefully placed composition.
