Lilly Metom

Summary

Lilly is an autodidact artist. Her art journey has been featured many times in the local newspapers, which has inspired many of her kind to embark in the same self-discovery of fine arts. She is professionally trained in Applied Linguistics, with focus on Sociolinguistics. She has a bachelor’s degree in TESL (HONS) from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Bangi (1998), and a master’s degree in English Language Studies from the same university (2000). She is also a PhD candidate at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), Sarawak, Malaysia. Currently, she teaches English at Universiti Teknologi MARA, Sarawak Campus as a senior lecturer. Prior to that, she taught English at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) for five years before moving back to her home state.

Although not formally trained in fine arts, she explores several art media and is most fond of oil painting. Being deeply rooted to her Iban heritage and researching her own people for her PhD study, her paintings depict the exquisite beauty of the Iban in Sarawak. Apart from painting images of her own people, through her intuition and self-discovery, she also creates art pieces that revolve around themes of other cultures, as well as exotic flora, and fauna. Her paintings have graced many homes and premises as far as India, UAE, and Australia. She has been actively painting, participating in group art exhibitions, and joining art camps both locally and internationally since 2016.
