Acrylics and watercolour - semi abstract expressionism

Whether it is through painting, jewellery design or urban sketching, it is undeniable how art plays a significant part in Sheila’s life. In her paintings, her abstract expressionism style allows her to venture outside the norm. Sheila is constantly evolving in her skills as she eagerly reads and researches into new forms of art creation. Her choice of colors is often denoted by her emotion. As a semi-abstract expressionist, Sheila’s work is an expression of herself, born out of profound emotion and universal themes. This has led her to explore various forms of semi-abstract art with many different mediums. Sheila sees herself as an observer of the world and draws her inspiration from her surroundings. Sheila uses rich tones to accentuate the interpretation of her paintings in her work in watercolour, acrylic and oil on canvas. Her semi-abstract paintings regularly provoke her audience to join her in exploring their senses and connection with their subconscious mind.

Started as a hobby in her younger days, Sheila only seriously pursues art in 2010 and has actively exhibited her work in numerous exhibitions since then. Many pieces of her art are in homes and offices in Malaysia, England, New Zealand, Japan, and Australia. A few of her painting are also collected by Sarawak State Library. Sheila has also donated her work for art auctions in the past in aid of Lions Nursing Home, Lions clubs and The Federation Thalassemia Malaysia Society’s fund raising.

Working with the Autistic community takes up a big part in Sheila’s life. She is a full-time volunteer at Kuching Autistic Association (KAA) for the last ten years. Since her involvement, the association’s vocational training has included art and beading therapy in their programme, and she oversees the artistic programme for the center.

When time permits, Sheila joins Urban Sketchers Kuching in their monthly “sketch crawls”. As a frequent traveler, Sheila creates personal documents of her impressions and memories of the places that she visits with sketches. Besides painting, Sheila is a beadwork artist. Her work is collected by mostly overseas visitors. Sheila is a member of the Sarawak Artist Society, Urban Sketchers Kuching, Society Atelier Sarawak, Malaysia Women Artists Association and Society of Arts and Craft Sarawak.

Sheila holds a MSc degree in Training and Human Resource Management (Leicester Uni, England) and a Diploma in Montessori early childhood education (London). She was a senior bank executive for nearly eighteen years before she left to pursue early childhood education. After six years, she pursues the artistic side of her nature until today.

In 2018, Sheila was awarded Darjah Yang Amat Mulia Bintang Sarawak- Bentara Bintang Sarawak (BBS) by the Sarawak State government in recognition for her work with Kuching Autistic Association.
