Curator’s Message by Dr. Mohamad Faizuan Mat
Sarawak Cultural Landscape in Spectrum, an exhibition that honors the vibrant and diverse cultural heritage of Sarawak. This collection captures the essence of the region’s rich traditions, its people, and the natural world that surrounds them. Through a variety of artistic expressions—ranging from traditional weaving techniques to contemporary interpretations of nature and technology—each piece reflects the intricate connection between Sarawak’s past, present, and future.
Central to this exhibition is the exploration of cultural identity. The works evoke the spirit of Sarawak’s communities, their crafts, and their deep relationship with the land. The rainforest, a symbol of life and sustenance, intertwines with the flora and fauna depicted in these pieces, while the cat, an emblem of Kuching, offers an iconic reflection of urban life in harmony with nature.
Through the use of both traditional materials and modern mediums, the exhibition invites viewers to witness the dialogue between culture and innovation. Each artwork serves as a narrative, celebrating the rich tapestry of races, ethnicities, and traditions that shape Sarawak’s identity.
We hope this exhibition inspires a deeper connection to the cultural and natural landscapes that define our shared heritage, while offering a glimpse into the evolving artistic expressions of Sarawak today. Thank you for embarking on this journey through the colors, textures, and stories of Sarawak Cultural Landscape in Spectrum.
