Summary
This sculpture is a response made against the threat of modern technology towards the decline of cultural values among the contemporary generation of the day. Mundane object in the form of charred match sticks was selected as a metaphor to symbolize the two opposing forces at war.
Jiyak-jiyak Gaya Susup in Melanau; literally means “Be careful when alighting”. The two series of work are an attempt into creating a sense of awareness among the young of the danger of being too engrossed with the gadgets (hence burning down of their culture) and becoming a society whom are ignorant of their own cultural roots.
