Summary

Liew Kim Phiaw, also known as Fook Liew, is an artist born in 1973 in Bau, Sarawak . As a realist artist , he places significant emphasis on techniques that portray details, perspective, and chiaroscuro in his artworks. He is extremely cautious and selective when it comes to choosing subjects, as creating a hyper realistic painting requires investing hundreds of hours. He approaches each detail with great care, aimed at presenting the artwork in a lifelike manner.

He has been involved in creating murals mainly in the Bau District. For instance, the mural “Hakka Lion” in the Siniawan heritage old town was created to preserve the Hakka culture. It portrays the festive atmosphere of Chinese New Year and conveys the artistic essence of Hakka culture through the Hakka lion motif. Another mural at the Public Toilet in Bau town features themes of flowers and vibrant-coloured birds, aimed at changing people’s perception of public toilets. This mural successfully earned Bau District the top spot in a national public toilet competition, with a five-star rating. At the Maybank branch in Bau , the mural captures the harmonious coexistence of different ethnicities and showcases local bird species.

Currently, Fook Liew is conducting classes on realistic graphite pencil drawing at MJC, Kuching.
